How to choose the right litter box?

One of the most important decisions you’ll make as a cat parent is choosing the right litter and litter box.   Making the wrong choice could result in some rather pretty frustrating situations.

Lucky for us, most cats are pretty good at staying in the litter box so long as it’s scooped out and cleaned regularly.  For other cats, it may not be as easy.  So many things could play a role in your cat rejecting their bathroom arrangement.  Here are some things to think about before buying a new litter box and litter:

What size should the litter box be?

The size is one of the most important factors when choosing a litter box.  Cats need to be able to move around in there.  Choose a box that is at least one and a half times bigger than your cat.  You cat must not feel too cramped as they get in the box.

How a cat gets in is also very important.  A low entry point is best suited for cats who are tiny, older or have mobility issues.  If your cat is still young and active, a top entry box might be a good option.

What type of litter box?

Many types of litter boxes are available now. There are all kinds to choose from, including ones built into beautiful furniture. This is especially useful for homes with many cats, where one litter box is not enough.  It is recommended that you have at least one litter box per number of cats and have a spare one on top of that.

Another type that may sound appealing is a self-cleaning litter box which make it easier to keep it clean. These litter boxes have improved greatly over the years. They allow cat-parents to avoid handling waste as much as possible.  They are a great option to choose for busy people or those who sometimes forget to clean the litter box.

Finally, they also come in a wide variety of materials such as plastic or stainless steel.  It’s best to choose one that is non-absorbing to prevent stains and odors.  As an extension to this point, be sure to consider how easy it is to clean the box.  As an example, a box with walls that come apart can make it much easier to maintain than one that is one big piece. Ultimately, every cat has different preferences. You’ll quickly find out if they don’t like your choice.

What type of litter?

As with the boxes, there are various factors to consider when picking the litter. Some types of litter are specifically made for one box, while you can use others in any box.  In general, it’s best to avoid the pellet size litter.  That would be comparable to walking bare foot on pebbles or walking on sand.  It’s just way more comfortable for your friend’s little paws.

Another thing to consider is to avoid scented litter. I realize it might be tempting to cover the smell with a vanilla-scented litter. But, cats are very sensitive to scents. The added scent might drive your cat to go elsewhere to do their business.

Where to put the litter box?

One last thing to consider is where to put the litter box. Don’t hide it behind a pile of stuff. That might make it harder for your fur baby to access, especially as they age and become less mobile.  THat’s not to say that it should be in the middle of the room either.  Just like us, our four-legged friend likes a bit of privacy.

In conclusion, your cat might not care much about the box or litter you get. They just want it kept clean.  There’s also a chance that you might need to try several options before your cat is happy with your pick. Picking the right litter box can be trial and error. But, if you follow the considerations I’ve highlighted, it should be easier to find the perfect match.
